Football Spreads
A football point spread shows how much a team is favoured. The favourite will have a minus symbol and a number, while the underdog will be given a plus. This means the underdog is “getting” points.
For example, if the Buffalo Bills NFL odds are -6.5 against the Seattle Seahawks, this means the Bills are favoured by 6.5 points. They would need to win by seven points or more for a wager to pay out.
If a bettor backed Seattle +6.5, the bet would win if Seattle lost by six or fewer points or if they won the game.
If the spread is a full point, like if the Bills were -3, then the bet pushes if the Bills beat the Seahawks by exactly three points, and your original wager is refunded.
Football Moneylines
The simplest version of football betting is the moneyline. This is a straightforward wager on which team will win a game.
The favoured team will have shorter moneyline odds than their opponent. For example, if Georgia is expected to beat Alabama, Georgia might be -150 on the moneyline.
In this instance, a $10 bet on Georgia to win the game would have a potential payout of $16.67.
In this matchup, Alabama would likely be priced around +140 to win. A $10 wager on the Crimson Tide would have a potential return of $24.
Football Over/Under Totals
Betting on the total number of points is a popular option. This is focused entirely on how many points the teams combine for.
If the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes play, CFL odds might set the total at 48.5 points. Bettors would then wager on whether there would be over or under this number of points.
A wager on the under requires the teams to combine for 48 or fewer points. A bet on the over needs the teams to score 49 or more.
Football Prop Bets
Football prop bets cover game-wide props, team props, and player props.
As an example, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have player props for passing yards, rushing yards, touchdowns thrown, passing attempts, and various other statistical categories.
Some of these props will be an over/under option. Others will be focused on reaching a certain landmark, like 2+ touchdowns in a game or 5+ rushing attempts.
Football Parlays
Combine picks from various football games to construct a parlay. Multiple selections make up one wager, with all picks needing to land for the bet to pay out.
Bettors can mix and match across markets and games when creating their football parlay. The odds will increase with more selections added.
